WASHN is an active education body in the Sexual Health area in Western Australia. They had an existing site built using WordPress and MyBB which had not had the core or plugins updated in 6 years. The central business driver of the site is the eYarning Forum which was running on MyBB and an integrated mailing list on Mailchimp although this was not conntect to the site and required an admin to manually add new site users to the mailing list.
We first updated the MyBB to the latest version and updated associated plugins. Once this was stable we updated the main WordPress core to the latest version in stages as there were significant database structure updates over the period the site was active.
Once this was achieved a new mobile responsive theme was sourced and installed, incorporating the WASHN logo and branding. With the new theme and updated core came the option migrate away from MyBB (non-responsive) and port their database to BBPress which could then be directly administered via single-login. The client agreed and we migrated the forums over including all 4000 threads and 600 user accounts.
The site was then secured against splogger (spam account registrations) using WangGuard and Sucuri to protect against viruses.
The client is now enjoying central administration instead of multiple logins, massively reduced splogger registrations (down from 5 or 6 per day to 2 in 4 weeks) and enhanced user experience via mobile devices. Basic SEO work in the architecture of the theme has meant a steady increase in organic traffic from Google even though this was not part of the brief.
Automating mailing list signups by integrating the new user registration with mailchimp upon new account signup, has also meant time saving as this was previously manually handled. A new mailing list template designed for mobiles, and powered by an RSS feed from the site means no more manual mailings as mailchimp now sends an automatic update to all subscribers each week with links to all the new threads.
